SmartLight: The right lighting for every stable
Lighting management tailored to your needs and targeted energy use in a smart lighting system. Easily controlled via the Kerbl smart app. Flexible to use in both retrofit projects and new builds.
Why does the lighting need to be controlled?
The amount of natural light entering the stable varies throughout the day, depending on the weather and across the seasons. At the same time, lighting conditions that are as consistent as possible and tailored to the needs of both animals and humans should be created.
If artificial lighting is operated independently of the available natural light, energy may be wasted unnecessarily. Furthermore, defined light and dark phases or individual lighting programmes should not have to be controlled manually on a daily basis.
SmartLight handles these tasks automatically – based on time, brightness and tailored to the specific barn’s operations.
Lighting tailored to your needs. Precisely controlled
Lighting duration and brightness can be specifically adjusted throughout the day to suit the type of animal, usage and operational procedures.
With SmartLight, individual brightness profiles can be created with any number of switching and control times. This allows for defined light and dark phases, different brightness levels and gentle transitions in the morning and evening – right through to the simulation of sunrise and sunset.
At the same time, SmartLight takes existing daylight into account if required. A light sensor detects the current brightness, and the artificial lighting only supplements the amount still needed to achieve the desired light level.
This results in needs-based lighting management that takes both the animals and the farm into account and helps to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
What control options does SmartLight offer?
Time- and sensor-controlled regulation
SmartLight takes account of the available daylight and performs automatic adjustments to the artificial lighting.
Time-controlled regulation
Any number of time points with different brightness levels can be defined for the course of the day.
Soft light gradients
Changes in brightness can be applied instantly or gradually – for example, to simulate sunrise and sunset.
Manual override
The automatic function can be paused at any time via the KERBL smart app or using on-site buttons (wired buttons installed on site or SmartLight wireless buttons) and reactivated as required.
Convenient control with Kerbl smart
Configuration and operation are carried out via the Kerbl smart app.
This allows you, amongst other things, to:
- switch lighting circuits on and off
- set your desired brightness levels
- configure time and brightness programmes
- activate automatic mode or override it manually
- assign sensors and buttons
- change settings remotely
This way, you can keep an eye on your lighting at all times and intervene quickly if necessary.
Flexible for a range of stables – from existing structures to new buildings
SmartLight is not just designed for modern new buildings. The system can be adapted to different types of animals, housing designs and existing lighting systems.
Dairy cattle and cattle barns
Customised lighting programmes allow for defined periods of light and darkness and automatic adjustment to the available daylight.
Poultry pens
Created using AI.
Independently controllable lighting circuits allow for different lighting programmes and – provided the appropriate lighting fixtures are installed – also enable the separate control unit for different light colours.
Existing livestock housing facilities
Existing non-dimmable luminaires can be switched on and off automatically. Suitable dimmable luminaires can also be adjusted in terms of brightness and throughout the day.
New buildings
Lighting zones, sensors and control points can be tailored to the specific requirements of the barn and its intended use right from the start.
SmartLight – a system that grows with you
SmartLight consists of several components that can be flexibly combined with one another.
SmartLight Controller
The central control unit of the SmartLight system, featuring two independently controllable lighting circuits. Each controller can be connected to 2 light sensors, 2 wired buttons and additional wireless buttons. One SmartLight light sensor is included in the scope of delivery.
SmartLight sensor
Detects ambient light levels and enables daylight-dependent control. Suitable for indoor or outdoors, depending on the application.
SmartLight Wireless Button
Optional wireless button for additional control points on site – with no need for an extra control cable, making it particularly simply retrofittable.
Expandable system
Several SmartLight controllers can be connected via an RS485 bus to form a flexibly extendable system with multiple lighting circuits. Sensors and buttons can be flexibly assigned to the lighting circuits. The system is operated via the Kerbl smart app, in a web browser or directly on site.

More on led lighting in stables and yards
Lighting control tailored to your needs is particularly effective when the lighting itself is properly planned. In our guide to led lighting, you’ll learn what matters when it comes to light intensity, lighting duration, energy efficiency and the selection of suitable LED luminaires for stables, yards and agricultural buildings. There you’ll find further information, practical notes and the basis for a well-thought-out lighting solution.
Planning led lighting for horse stables effectively
Horses have specific requirements when it comes to lighting conditions, uniformity and glare-free illumination. If, in addition to cattle or dairy farming, you also wish to light horse areas, riding stables or equestrian centres, you will find detailed information in our guide to led lighting for horses on the animals’ perception of light, suitable light distribution and safe lighting for stables, riding arenas and farmyard areas.
