LED lighting for horses

The light spectrum and light distribution have a significant impact on your animals’ fertility, immune system, well-being, activity levels, growth and performance. 

The importance of light for the horse

No matter how the horse is used by humans, a mutual trust is of great importance for a good cooperation. The horse is a flight animal by nature and constantly observes its surroundings.

A decisive aspect is, among other things, vision, for which suitable lighting conditions are important. But light does not only influence the horse's vision. The animals react to the number of hours of light, the intensity or even the colour of the light. For example, fertility or the change of coat depends on the availability of light. The vitality of horses also depends on this.

First and foremost, of course, this refers to the natural daylight of the sun. Artificial light, however, offers an additional source of light and can have a positive effect on the well-being of the animals if used appropriately.

Horses see differently

Light requirements

The natural habitat of horses is the steppe. Wide, tree-free areas are characteristic of steppes. Depending on the season, there is plenty of daylight under the open skies. In the course of evolution, horses adapted to their circumstances. This means that the animals have high light tolerance, but they have also developed high light requirements. This comes to the fore particularly when we compare their natural habitat with that of farm animals such as cattle and pigs.

The Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection set the target for illuminance in stables at a minimum of 80 lux for livestock over at least 8 hours a day as part of humane farming. This level is also reflected in the recommendations of the German Equestrian Federation. The word “minimum” emphasises that this is the lower value. Higher illuminance levels meet the animals’ high light requirements

Field of vision

A horse‘s field of view is typical of a prey animal. The eyes are arranged laterally, thereby enabling almost a full all-round view without having to move the head. The largest part of the field of view is thereby covered by just one eye (two-dimensional vision). Its view tends to be towards the ground. Instinctively, horses want to see what is happening around them. With a clear view of its surroundings, the animal can recognise and assess potential threats. Unobstructed perception helps calm the animals. Even lighting without blinding the animals helps them perceive their environment.


Colour perception

Different cones in the retina of the eye are responsible for colour perception. While humans have three different cone types, horses do not have the L cone for recognising red shades. Horses see in shades of yellow, green and blue. If you take this into account when designing lighting, you can help your horse to better perceive contrasts. The horse can then fully concentrate on other tasks.

Seeing in bright and dark environments

Horses have much better twilight vision than humans. However, the eye has to adjust to the respective lighting conditions. In the wild, the daylight does not just switch on and off. Sunrise and sunset are a smooth transition between light and dark, and vice versa. An abrupt change requires a period of familiarisation. When switching from light to dark in particular, horses initially see next to nothing. This short-term blindness leads to unnecessary discomfort for the horse. The time required to get used to the new light condition is longer for horses than it is for humans.

As well as high stress due to humidity and dust, lights in stables are exposed to a lot of chemicals in the ambient air and due to cleaning processes. In particular, lights have to be able to withstand high concentrations of ammonia. Therefore, to ensure a long service life, we focus our efforts on the technical design, the use of suitable electronic components and materials, and high-quality workmanship of our LED lights.

Economic and environmentally friendly operation
Not all LEDs are made equal. The details matter when it comes to taking full advantage of the potential savings in terms of costs and energy consumption. A high light output and optimised light distribution reduce the number of lamps required. At the same time, it’s also what’s inside that counts if you want to enjoy your lighting for a long time, as this ultimately affects the life and maintenance costs.


Homogeneous and glare-free light

Our LED lights ensure homogeneous illumination and take into account horses’ high light needs. Even and glare-free illumination
prevents shadows, which horses can perceive as a threat in their two-dimensional field of view.


Horse-friendly light

The colour temperature of our light is within the range of daylight white (> 5,300 K). The higher the colour temperature, the higher the blue/green portion in the spectral composition of the light. This decisively accommodates horse colour perception.


Custom lighting conditions

Lighting controls mean you can address external lighting conditions individually and create a smooth transition using automatic dimming. This makes adapting to ambient lighting conditions easier. Treatment light

Use our lights in stalls and pens for sick animals, and in hoof care. The excellent colour reproduction of our lights creates a suitable
environment for examinations and treatments.
The “Light and lighting – Lighting of work places – Part 1: Workplaces in interiors” (DIN EN 12464-1) standard recommends an illuminance
of 200 lux in stalls for sick animals.

Lighting in equestrian sports

For equestrian sports, the standard ‘Light and lighting – Sports facility lighting’ (DIN EN 12193) specifies requirements for lighting. A distinction is made between different lighting classes.

Outdoors

Artificial lighting is always needed outdoors when there is insufficient natural light. Light pollution should be kept as low as possible according to the Federal Pollution Control Act. Separate switching of individual lights or lighting groups is recommended to adapt lighting to the actual need.

Interior

Natural light is lower in a riding arena than outdoors, which is why a higher light level is necessary and sometimes required. Here, too, there is the option of switching each light individually or to link them into switching groups.

LED Flood Light Perfect light for horse and rider with Comfort Pro 200 W

As steppe animals, horses have a high need for light and, as prey animals, have a very wide field of view (340 °). They see in mainly shades of green and blue and only adapt slowly to changes between light and dark. The LED floodlight Comfort Pro 200 W is adapted to these needs and special features and is therefore perfectly suited as a riding arena light. Halogen metal halide lamps (HQI/HIE) are frequently the first choice for riding arena lighting due to their relatively good luminous efficacy and colour rendering. The following example shows, however, that a conversion to LED technology can pay for itself quite quickly.
