Basic terms of lighting technology

Today, it is no longer sufficient to judge the light output of a lamp or luminaire only by its wattage. The luminous flux (lumens) and the luminous efficacy (lumens per watt) are much more decisive.

Luminous flux
Unit: Lumen (lm)
Luminous flux refers to the total amount of light emitted by a light source in all directions. It is an important criterion when comparing luminaires.

Example:
A 100 W light bulb produces a luminous flux of approx. 1,000 lumens.

Luminous Efficacy
Unit: Lumens per watt (lm/W)
Luminous efficacy indicates the efficiency of a lamp and is calculated from the ratio of luminous flux emitted to power consumed.

Examples:
Classic light bulb approx. 10 lm/W
Halogen spot approx. 18 lm/W
LED chip approx. 100-170 lm/W

Illuminance
Unit: Lux (lx)
1 Lux = 1 lm/m²
Illuminance refers to the luminous flux incident on a specific surface. It is ultimately the decisive measure for assessing the brightness at a certain point in the room. The further away the light source, the larger the illuminated area and the correspondingly lower the illuminance. The measurement of illuminance in the barn should be done at eye level.

Why switch to LED lighting in the stable and around the farmyard? The advantages for animals, humans and business – how you can benefit from Kerbl lighting solutions

LED lighting offers a number of decisive advantages especially for barn and yard areas:

  • Optimal lighting conditions for animals:
The ideal light intensity, duration and spectrum have been proven to promote lactation, fertility, stress resistance, the immune system as well as the well-being and activity of your animals. In dairy farming in particular, studies show that longer periods of daylight measurably increase milk yield.
  • Making work easier and safer:
High-performance LED lights and flicker-free light make working in the barn, milking parlours or paddocks safer and more pleasant, reducing the risk of fatigue.
  • Ammonia-resistant quality lights:
The Kerbl LED luminaires, which have been approved by the DLG for resistance to ammonia, are specially designed for the harsh conditions in stables - resistant to dust, moisture, cleaning chemicals and high levels of ammonia.

  • LED technology in the barn pays off
LEDs achieve high luminous efficacy, meaning a high luminous flux per unit of electrical output consumed. The investment costs for new equipment or retrofitting are amortised after a short time through considerable savings in operation. A suitable 50 W LED spotlight can consume up to 90 per cent less electricity than a 500 W halogen spotlight whilst delivering comparable light output.
  • Service life of LED chips
Depending on the design and operating conditions, LED chips can achieve a service life of up to 100,000 hours. In continuous operation, this is approx. 6 years, with daily operation of 8 hours even more than 17 years. Costs for maintenance and lamp replacement are thus reduced to a minimum. LED chips also do not simply fail but lose brightness over time (degradation).
  • Luminous efficacy
LED luminaires can achieve a significantly higher luminous efficacy than conventional halogen luminaires; typical LED chips, for example, offer approx. 100–200 lm/W, compared with approx. 18 lm/W for halogen spotlights.
  • High switching resistance
Unlike energy-saving or fluorescent lamps, the robust light-emitting diodes are practically insensitive to frequent switching on and off. They are therefore also ideally suited for switching-intensive operation on motion detectors.
  • Full light output immediately
Minute-long "warm-up phases" are a thing of the past with LEDs because they provide 100 % light output immediately after being switched on.
  • Full light output even at low temperatures
LEDs reach their full light output immediately, even at low temperatures, and are therefore ideal for use outdoors or in unheated buildings.
  • Low UV radiation
Unlike the human eye, insects’ eyes are particularly sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The high-pressure mercury vapour lamps that were commonly used in the past still act like a vacuum cleaner for millions of insects due to their high UV content. LED light generally has a very low UV content and therefore attracts far fewer insects than light sources rich in UV radiation.
  • No additional heat input
The light emitted by an LED remains cool - in contrast to temperature radiators such as halogen or incandescent lamps, where a large part of the energy is converted into infrared radiation and thus into heat. In LEDs, heat is generated in the electronics but is not radiated in the direction of the object to be illuminated.
  • Natural colour perception
In dairy cattle husbandry, a high and thus natural colour rendition is required for colour differentiation of blood, urine and milk, especially in treatment stalls, sick stalls and calving pens. The quality of colour rendering is indicated by the Ra value. The maximum possible value is 100, an Ra value of > 75 is recommended. In contrast to LEDs, sodium vapour lamps (Ra 20-50), for example, have very poor colour rendering properties.
  • Mercury free LED technology
LED luminaires do not contain mercury and can be disposed of at the designated collection points for waste electrical equipment.

LED in agriculture

Biological effect - More milk through more light
Lighting duration, intensity and colour have a great influence on lactation, fertility and animal welfare. In dairy farming, lighting management is therefore of particular importance.
Scientific studies show that long daylight phases with 16 hours of brightness and 8 hours of darkness can increase daily milk production by an average of 5-15 %. The prerequisite is a uniform illuminance of 150-200 lux.

How does it work?
Light signals are sent to the pineal gland via the animal's eyes. A higher amount of light reduces the release of the hormone melatonin from the pineal gland, which in turn stimulates the liver to produce the IGF-1 hormone. This ultimately leads to increased activity of the cow, more appetite and increased milk production.

Young cattle
Increasing the light intensity with 16 hours of brightness and 8 hours of darkness also has a positive effect on the development of young cattle. An increased amount of light stimulates activity and appetite and accelerates the growth of the animals.

Dry standing cows
Daylight phases with 8 hours of light and 16 hours of darkness make sense for dry cows. This leads to higher milk yields in the following lactation. In addition, feed intake and the immune system are positively influenced. It is therefore advisable to house dry cows in a separate barn.

LED luminaires have all the prerequisites
In order to achieve optimal milk and growth performance, LED luminaires are particularly suitable for new barns and for the conversion of old barns. Where annual operating hours are high, power consumption and maintenance costs in particular can have a significant impact on cost-effectiveness.

Influence of colour temperature
The colour temperature of a light source also has a decisive influence on biorhythms. Here, a basic distinction is made between warm white. (< 3300 K), neutral white. and daylight white. (> 5300 K). The higher the colour temperature, the higher the blue-green component in the spectral composition of the light. Since the brightness perceived by the bovine eye is highest in the blue-green range, the use of luminaires with a high colour temperature is recommended to achieve an increase in productivity. LEDs with a colour temperature of at least 5,300 K are therefore particularly suitable.
