Pair housing in calf rearing

There are currently many changes taking place in the field of calf rearing. Firstly, there is the new Animal Welfare Transport Regulation (TierSchTrV). This stipulates that, from the start of 2023, calves must remain on the farm for 28 days rather than 14. This presents farmers with new challenges, including with regard to the housing of calves.

Growing up better together

On the other hand, calf rearing is increasingly coming under public scrutiny. Initiatives such as ‘End The Cage Age’ are campaigning to ban the widespread practice of keeping calves in individual pens across Europe in the foreseeable future.

You can find information on the different housing systems under ‘Calf housing’.

Calf hut for small groups

Would you like to keep your calves in pairs or small groups right from the start, whilst still keeping an eye on each individual calf? Our new CalfHouse Premium Duo calf hut is ideal for this.

With 3.2 m² of lying area and 2.55 m² of outdoor space, the hut offers plenty of room for up to three calves weighing up to 150 kg, or two calves in organic livestock farming.

The spacious hut provides the ideal retreat and simply divides the accommodation into a quiet area and an active outdoor area.

With three drinking and feeding areas in the doorway and two additional ones at the corners of the fencing, the structure offers flexible use. For example, one of the areas in the doorway can also be used for a feed box.

Once the hut has been assembled, there is no need to take it apart again. The fencing can be folded back, and the entire hut, including the fencing, can be transported by tractor. Transport rails are fitted to the roof.

Modular calf boxes enable both individual and group housing

To give you greater flexibility in your decision-making, to try out new housing arrangements, to keep your options open and to be prepared for the future, we recommend our modular calf boxes. They offer an ideal solution, as they allow you to combine individual and group housing within the same calf box:

Thanks to easy-to-assemble, movable partitions, the pen can be used for individual housing during the first few days and then very easily converted into a group pen. The flexible expansion options allow you to opt for pair or small-group housing depending on the calves’ age, in order to deliberately minimise the risk of infection or to encourage social behaviour.

Keeping animals in groups made easy

After just a short time, calves develop a natural urge to play and begin to interact with their fellow calves and the objects around them. This can sometimes have undesirable side effects. For example, when the lively little calves knock the drinking buckets out of their holders.

This makes it all the more important to design the barn in an engaging way, provide plenty of opportunities for play and prevent unwanted ‘play-related accidents’.

Be inspired by our clever solutions for your barn:

Small but mighty. This applies not only to the calves, but also to our  Bucket Guard . This little green helper has been specially designed to prevent calves from knocking their feeding buckets out of their holders. It ensures that feeding buckets lying on the floor in front of the pen are a thing of the past.

The calves’ play behaviour is a sign of their well-being and should be actively encouraged.  Feed balls and hay sacks stimulate the calves’ curiosity and encourage interaction; as animal-friendly enrichment materials, they make an important contribution to animal welfare. Feed balls also satisfy the calves’ unfulfilled sucking instinct and gradually and playfully accustom them to species-appropriate roughage intake.
